"Carved Cane – Shepherd’s Cane With Zoomorphic Decor, Dog’s Head And Snake – Folk Art"
Second half of the 19th century Dated 1873 France – Auvergne This shepherd's cane in monoxyl wood, carved and patinated, embodies all the symbolic richness and inventiveness of 19th century folk art. Topped with a dog's head with a small collar, with naive and expressive features, it is part of the tradition of pastoral objects where each sculpted element carries meaning. Faithful companion of the shepherd, the dog watches over the one holding the cane, while a snake with pearl eyes, finely engraved in a spiral on the lower part of the shaft, recalls the protective symbols from rural beliefs. The cane is dated 1873, discreetly incised on the wood, testifying to a creation undoubtedly marking a particular event - a marriage, a transmission or a ceremonial work for the shepherd himself. The twist carved in the mass, at the base, underlines the mastery of the craftsman. Patinated by time, with an old original varnish, it has a warm color, oscillating between honey and amber brown. Its traces of use do not detract from its evocative force. Condition: Beautiful old patina, original varnish, traces of use related to time. Missing the ferrule.
