"Carved Box – Lacemaker’s Box With Rosette And Monstrances Decor – Folk Art"
Late 19th century France – Auvergne - Haute-Loire This finely carved wooden lacemaker's box features a rich and symbolic decoration, combining central rosettes and stylized monstrances engraved in hollow, in a typically rural style. The lid is decorated with a large radiant rosette, a solar motif omnipresent in Auvergne folk art, framed by geometric friezes. The front is decorated with a more complex rosette around the lock, framed by two large monstrances engraved in a triangle, recalling the symbols of protection and religious influences dear to the world of lacemakers. A rare and touching detail: inside the back panel, we can see two engraved axes, preparatory sketches left voluntarily or not by the craftsman, moving traces of the work in progress. The box retains its original lock and key (non-functional and seized mechanism), and is covered with an old varnish, giving a beautiful warm patina, oscillating between golden honey and light brown. Condition: Beautiful old patina, original varnish, seized lock mechanism (non-functional). Dimensions: Height: 15 cm Length: 28.5 cm Depth: 15 cm Shipping: ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY!
