"Carved Cane – Shepherd’s Cane With Zoomorphic Decor, Lion Fighting A Snake – Folk Art"
Second half of the 19th century France – Auvergne This carved and patinated wooden cane illustrates with force and naivety all the symbolism of rural folk art. Topped with an extremely naive lion, with an expressive and almost grotesque face, it depicts a symbolic fight against a snake that coils around the shaft. This iconography refers to the eternal struggles between good and evil, light and darkness, omnipresent in pastoral beliefs. The lion, a figure of strength and courage, is opposed here to a sinuous snake whose twisted body follows the shape of the cane, highlighting the craftsman's know-how. The woodwork, entirely done by hand, shows a rustic and sincere mastery, where the naivety of the features gives the object a strong presence and remarkable authenticity. The old patina, warmed by an original varnish, oscillates between golden honey and amber brown, giving the whole a lively visual texture. Traces of use and slight wear confirm the past life of this pastoral object. Condition: Beautiful old patina, original varnish, traces of use related to time.
