"Pair Of Embossed And Gilded Leathers, Known As "cordoue", France, Rhône Valley, Late 17th Century"
Pair of embossed and gilded leathers, improperly called "Cordoba leathers", worked using the embossing processes invented and perfected in the Netherlands in the 17th century, with motifs of gadrooned vases topped with floral bouquets and flanked by birds, circumscribed by a festooned medallion, the spandrels decorated with floral and leafy motifs. The gilded varnishes and painted elements have retained a beautiful freshness. These are undoubtedly elements of an antependium, as was customary in the South, and more precisely in the Rhone Valley which saw a significant production of these luxurious objects intended for private homes and liturgical use, at the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century. There is some old damage documented at best in photos. Missing parts, tears, cracks, holes. Nevertheless, very decorative objects. mounted on a frame and ready to hang. Dimensions 73x60 cm
