"Jules Boncza (1834-1920), The Torment Of Mazeppa"
Oil on canvas dated 1861, representing the torture of Mazeppa, an inspiring subject of the 19th century romantic. Painting signed lower right "Boncza" Jules Boncza de Tomaszewski (1834-1920) was a Polish painter born in Saint Petersburg and died in Nice. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, he specialized in historical painting, genre scenes and portraits. After a stay in Italy, he settled in Paris in 1861, where he exhibited regularly at the Salon. Among his notable works are The Execution of Brunehilde, Peter the Great contemplating the monument of Richelieu and scenes inspired by Molière. His work was appreciated by Emperor Alexander III, who acquired some of his works for the imperial collection. Good general condition, traces of restoration to be noted. Dimensions: 46 / 34 cm
