Two Engravings On The Theme Of The Parable Of The Rich Man And Lazarus By Heinrich Aldegrever, 1554

The Artist:
Heinrich Aldegrever was born around 1502 in Paderborn, Germany, and died in Soest around 1559. A talented engraver and also a painter, he was part of the group known as the "Little Masters" (Kleinmeister), recognized for his exceptional ability to create very small engravings with an abundance of precise details. His early engraved works were heavily influenced by Albrecht Dürer. Even his monogram, featuring the letters "AG," may be a tribute to the master of Nuremberg, whose monogram bore the letters "AD."

These two engravings are part of a series of five prints dedicated to the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. Complete series can be found in Amsterdam, Berlin, Bremen, Brunswick, Cambridge, Coburg, Dresden, London, Münster, Warsaw, and Wolfegg.

• Signed: With the monogram "AG" and dated "1554" on a plaque affixed to the wall at the top, numbered "3" in the upper right corner
• Inscription: A Latin line beneath the composition: "DIVES. EPVLO. EXTREMUM. HIC OBIT.DIEM.LVCE. 16"
• Dimensions: Height: 11 cm; Width: 7.9 cm
