The traditional design of the candlestick is here completely transformed by the search for dynamism and contrast. Starting from the asymmetrical base, a spiral movement envelops the object, accentuated by the opposition between ascending and descending elements. Opposing forces seem to confront each other and run through the silvered bronze with their quivering, in a vigorous permanent counter-movement. JUSTE-AURÈLE MEISSONNIER (1695-1750): goldsmith to the king working at the Gobelins, succeeding Jean Berain as architect and designer of the king's bedroom and cabinet, he became one of the main ornamentalists propagating the asymmetrical rocaille style. The son of a goldsmith from Aix-en-Provence who had settled in Turin, Meissonnier came to settle in Paris around 1715. This artist with varied talents – he was a medal engraver, chaser, goldsmith, sculptor, designer, decorator, painter, architect – held the prestigious position of designer of the King's Chamber and Cabinet from 1726. Above all an inventor of forms, he created on paper a marvelous and surprising universe, where asymmetry triumphs, and his innovative ideas contributed to the triumph of the rocaille taste in Paris in the 1730s. He disseminated his models through engraving – largely collected in a work published under the title OEuvre de Meissonnier –, entrusting the production to others who worked under his close supervision.
