"Crucifixion, Flanders, End Of The 16th Century"
Important oil on canvas from the end of the 16th century, representing the crucifixion with Mary and Saint John at the foot of the cross. The work, made by a Flemish artist, depicts the scene in a dramatic atmosphere counterbalanced by characters with sad but serene expressions. The way in which their faces are treated, the fabrics and the organization of the composition places the creation of the work at the end of the Renaissance, with a perceptible beginning of the art of the counter-reformation. The background, depicting the city of Jerusalem in a hilly landscape, is a painting in itself. It is painted in gray-blue tones, with a multitude of Gothic-style buildings, and contrasts with a sky in fiery colors. Painting in very good condition, but we note a relining and some old restorations, mainly at the level of the tunic of the virgin, and of a foot of the Saint. A coat of arms painted at the bottom of the work bears witness to a prestigious sponsor to be identified. Modern frame in blackened wood. Total dimensions: 102 X 75 cm, and 93 X 66 cm for the canvas
