White marble sculpture on a small veined marble base depicting a young woman dressed in a long tunic that she pulls to the side with one hand, while with the other she holds a jug on her head, a container that she places on one of her shoulders in an unusual posture. She wears jewelry and her hair is covered. This sculpture is known by the aforementioned title, which links it to the biblical theme, due to the lady's clothing, since there is no reference to a well. For this reason, it can also be known as the Water Carrier. From a stylistic point of view, it clearly shows influences of orientalizing currents, common in many European schools since the end of the 19th century. Guglielmo Pugi was an Italian sculptor whose studio was in Florence. He then worked with his sons (under the name of Guglielmo Pugi and Sons), who, after their father's death, continued to work under the name of Fratelli G. and F. Pugi. Their work focuses mainly on the export market of sculptures of various sizes (mainly in marble and alabaster), with varied themes. -
