Scenes from the Roman Comique by Paul Scarron. The first scene shows Ragotin on horseback with his rifle firing unintentionally. The second illustrates Ragotin being removed from the chest where the servant had locked him. This pair recalls the series of paintings made by Jean-Baptiste Pater to illustrate the work of Paul Scarron. Jeaurat's genre paintings, in the style of David Teniers, were extremely popular. He is sometimes even nicknamed the French Teniers. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1733 and was appointed guardian of the royal painting collection at Versailles in 1767. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes in the Louvre for the first time in 1737 and continued to do so until shortly before his death at the age of 90. The present pair of paintings has been attributed to Jeaurat by the Cabinet Millet, Paris.
