Graduate of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1846, he was invited to St Petersburg to help decorate the palace after the fire. On 1 May 1849, he joined the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory as a sculptor and, in 1853, was appointed master model. He worked at the manufactory until 1897, and was the author of most of the sculptures produced there over almost 50 years. His creations are astonishingly diverse: large clocks, decorative vases, porcelain sculptures, copies of eighteenth-century pieces from the Meissen and Sèvres factories. Empress Aria Leksandrovna was always the main customer for his works. Having formed a clear idea of her artistic preferences, Shpis created works that corresponded exactly to her taste. Pis's work reached its peak in the 1870s.
At this time, he created several vase shapes which, after a few modifications, were produced at the factory with different paint and covering variants.
