The panel presents us with an iconic image of the Virgin holding the Baby Jesus in her arms while on her left is portrayed Saint John the Baptist. The panel is contained within a golden frame from the 18th century.
Alessandro Allori, nicknamed Bronzino from the name of his teacher and adoptive father Agnolo, was one of the most famous artists in Florence during the 16th century. Trained in the workshop of Agnolo di Cosimo, where he perfected his drawing and study of human anatomy, Allori completed his apprenticeship in Rome, remaining strongly influenced by the style of the great masters of Mannerism.
After returning to Florence, the artist was appointed official painter at the Medici court and, in order to respond to the ever-increasing number of commissions, he started his own workshop.
The position of the three figures and the attention to the naturalistic rendering of the subjects, highlight how this painting has close analogies with the works of the same subject made by Allori in the early Seventies of the sixteenth century which therefore make it plausible that it is a painting made by him and a close collaborator of his right inside his workshop.
