JAPAN - Edo period (1603 - 1868). Kagura mask, long-nosed demon type, in carved monoxide wood, pierced eyes, nostrils and mouth, lacquered red and black, remains of gilding on the teeth and eyes. Slight wear and losses. Dimensions: 21.5 x 16.5 x 11 cm. Sold with its base. Dimensions with the base: 37 x 16.5 x 14.5 cm. Notes: A kagura mask representing an unidentified local demon. Kagura (literally, "Divine Entertainment") refers to a specific type of Shinto theatrical dance whose roots predate those of Noh theater. Originally a strictly ceremonial art, derived from kami'gakari (literally, "oracular divination"), kagura has evolved in many directions for over a millennium. Today it is a very lively tradition, whose rituals are linked to the rhythms of the agricultural calendar.
