"Kutani Porcelain Guanyin. Japan, Meiji Era, Late 19th Century."
The deity is represented standing holding a scroll in her hand. Her face has a benevolent expression and from her whole body emanates a great tranquility. The goddess of mercy is sculpted in fine Kutani porcelain covered with enamels and gold, discreetly a myriad of white enamel beads in slight relief give an effect of depth to the white of the dress. It is a very beautiful representation of Guanyin which stands out for the quality of its execution from the large quantity of similar deities created at this period in Japan. Under the base 2 of the 5 Chinese characters painted in red enamel tell us that the statue was created in the kilns of Kutani, the other 3 characters must probably inform us of the name of the artist. In good condition, no restoration, only the thumb of the left hand was broken and simply glued back on, as can be seen on an enlarged photo. Height 50cm.
