Object description :

"Andrée Simon (1896-1981), Abstract Composition "the Skies", Gouache On Paper From 1959."
Andrée SIMON, painter born in 1896 and died in 1981. Originally from Normandy, she was a drawing teacher for a few years and then devoted herself entirely to painting, setting up her first studio in Rennes in 1928. Her style was then figurative and very Cézanne-like. She became friends with André Lhote, who taught her painting in Mirmande in the Drôme, with whom she discovered the village of Gordes, a real favorite. With her husband, she bought a house there and lived there for forty years. Andrée Simon and André Lhote were then joined by many artists, some of whom were internationally renowned, such as Victor Vasarely, Serge Poliakoff, Marc Chagall, Jean Degottex, etc. Andrée Simon then oriented her art towards abstraction. It was a natural and obvious approach for her. She was inspired by the observation of trees, clouds and all the effects of light. This abstract art, initially geometric, later becomes lyrical. But nothing is left to chance. Andrée Simon "constructs" her works according to a very personal artistic approach. She gives free rein to her emotions while mastering them through a process born of her work and the method she imposes on herself. In this way, she is noticed by enlightened amateurs, art critics with whom she maintains close relationships such as Belon, Degand, Estienne. Let us not forget that she is a woman in a misogynistic environment. The art world is above all a man's universe. And yet, through her talent and her work, she will establish herself as an obvious choice: an essential artist with such a unique talent. This superb composition, a gouache on paper from 1959, is titled on the back "Les ciels" (The Skies). It comes from the artist's studio collection, carefully preserved by Martin Nicolas de Barry, his grandson, who has honored us by opening its doors so that we can discover, in our own way, the superb paintings, gouaches and watercolors of Andrée Simon. Dimensions on view: Height 25 cm Width 32.5 cm.
