Virgin of Carmen carved in wood and polychrome, an image richly dressed in a gold-embroidered tunic with a white lace collar, a white mantle with gold thread lace in profile, and a delicate veil on her head, also white. The Child, whom she holds in her left arm, wears a white chemise with a lace collar and cuffs and a brown tunic also embroidered and finished with gold thread, with a waist cord of the same fabric. The gold lace adorning Mary's mantle depicts scallop shells, alluding to the seafaring character of the Virgin of Carmen. Mary holds the scapular in her right hand and wears long earrings of gold and silver thread, as well as an openwork royal crown decorated with rays and stars, made of metal. The Child also appears adorned with a radial metal crown, simpler than that of his mother. The sculpture balances naturalism and idealization, and displays a delicacy and softness typical of the 19th century, enhanced by a subtle polychromy, with light and evanescent tones, strongly nuanced by the glazes. The eyes of both figures are made of glass, a common element in images of 19th-century Spanish clothing, which adds liveliness to the images. The whole rests on a base of polychromed clouds using the estofado technique, supported by a stylized architectural foot with a marble base simulated by polychromy.
