A little history...
Sphinxes were very fashionable throughout the 18th century on the terraces of royal and princely castles. Displaying the features of the King's favorites, the most famous that have come down to us today remain those decorating the Château de Ménars representing the Marquise de Pompadour. In stone, terracotta or even lead, the subjects saw many variations testifing to their success.
