In order to identify the owner of the bird in case of loss, the vervelle is provided with a coat of arms or distinctive signs making it easy to recognize the individual to which the bird is attached. Often made of copper alloy, silver or gold, these small objects are commonly enameled or engraved and are found in the form of a ring or small plaque.
