Oil on canvas, dated “1822” on the reverseDimensions: H. 17 cm x W. 14 cm visible, 27 x 25 cm with frame Jenny des Roys, born Joséphine Henriette Hoche in 1796 in Thionville, was the only daughter of General Louis Lazare Hoche, nicknamed the “Pacifier of the Vendée”. Coming from a prestigious background, she married Count Étienne-Annet des Roys, State Councillor and Peer of France, in 1814. Although little information remains about her artistic activity, Jenny des Roys likely received training in painting and drawing. Some of her works are annotated on the back “after Bidault”, which suggests a link with this artist. Jenny des Roys died in Paris in 1867 and is now buried at Gaillefontaine, in the family estate.
