Antoine Vollon began his career in Lyon, where he learned metal engraving and attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. He was a student of Théodule Ribot.
The artist then quickly mastered oil painting and became interested in etching. He settled in Paris where he frequented the great artists of his time, Carpeaux, Alexandre Dumas fils with whom he visited Normandy but quickly developed a particular interest for still lifes and landscapes with majestic skies and contrasting effects.
A jack of all trades, he also executed portraits, the most famous presented at the Salon of 1878 the portrait of a Spaniard with a dog at his feet His talent was very quickly recognized by critics and museum institutions.
His paintings can be found in the Louvre-Orsay, Nantes, Brussels, Glasgow, Moscow, Stockholm, etc.
