Very beautiful ceremonial Dan spoon from Ivory Coast dating from the very beginning of the 20th century. Patinated wood, shiny in places, and colored red and white at the top. Metal teeth. Height 40cm. Provenance: Estate of Major General Gustave Maignan 1880-1945. Stationed in French West Africa from June 30, 1911 to June 19, 1914 and in Ivory Coast from 1925 to 1927. A photo taken in 1941 of its interior with the spoon hanging on the wall on the right. These large anthropomorphic spoons were the reward given to the most deserving women in a village.
