Large And Heavy Solid Silver Cup, Early 18th Century, Louis XV Period. C1740.

Superb cup dating from the first half of the 18th century, from the reign of Louis XV. The cup rests on a gadrooned pedestal. The plain silver body is highlighted with fillets at the top.

The cup is numbered GLL, probably the initials of its first owner.

It is also engraved with the later number "MA" within a shield.

The cup is hallmarked:
. Crowned A: Parisian charge mark used between 1738 and 1744.
. Poorly struck master silversmith's mark to be identified: JD?
. Partial hallmark trace under the base, most likely the jurande mark.
. Dog's head: Parisian discharge mark for the same period.

A very fine cup, relatively early, with a well-flared rim, thick walls, and a weight that reflects its quality of manufacture.
