"Bronze Sculpture By Jules Cambos. Beatrice Of Dante. "
Bronze sculpture representing Dante's Beatrice. The muse seems to have come out of Gustave Doré's illustrations for Dante's masterpiece. This sculpture does not appear in any directory of Jules Cambos' works and is apparently completely unpublished. No foundry stamp, signature on the mound. The verse engraved on the base can be translated as "Turn around and understand that even my eyes are not Paradise". The play of drapery is quite extraordinary. Jules Cambos, French sculptor (1828/1917) is well referenced and documented. His works are featured in many museums including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. He also participated in the decoration of the Palais Garnier. This sculpture gives off an atmosphere close to the Romantic movement and the Pre-Raphaelite movement in vogue at the time. The patina that the photos do not render well is superb. Height: 46cm
