Narcisse CHAILLOU (1837-1916) "The painter on the motif" Oil on cardboard signed lower left 55x36cm (68x48.5cm framed) (on the back a marine study) Student of Léon Bonnat, Ernest Hébert and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Narcisse Chaillou then settled in Brittany from 1880. He lived in Baud (where he had a painting studio), Rennes and Pontivy. The painter often exhibited in Parisian salons, notably at the Salon de Paris and the Salon des Artistes Français. Narcisse Chaillou painted numerous portraits and landscapes, including scenes of Parisian life during the war of 1870. He exhibited at the Salon of 1872 a canvas painted during the siege of Paris in 1870: A rat merchant, souvenir of the siege of Paris, also known as The Rat Skinner, a canvas preserved at the Museum of Art and History of Saint-Denis. Narcisse Chaillou's paintings bear witness to the life of Parisians and Bretons at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His works are also preserved in several other public collections, including those of Rennes, Nantes, Morlaix and Vitré. The artist bequeathed 43 paintings to the City of Pontivy.
