Very young, he showed great talent for music. From 1933 to 1937, he studied piano and organ at the Maîtrise Saint-Evode, he reached the level of concert pianist and he considered making it his profession. At the same time, from the age of nine, he began painting. Jean Bréant, a disciple of the Rouen school, was fascinated by post-impressionist painting; for him, sensation took precedence over representation.
