Object description :

"Early 19th Century French Empire Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock With Putti And Library"
This gilt bronze table clock dating from the early 1800s is a charming French Empire clock depicting allegory of the arts. Arched case, flanked by two putti, one seated with a book and the other upright, one foot resting on books, intent on playing a musical instrument; the clock’s base, with two rectangular steps and decorative frieze with floral motifs, in the Empire style, adds an additional touch of elegance, while the beaded-bordered hemispherical feet provide good stability.
The white enamel dial with Roman numerals within mock bookcase surmounted by laurel wreaths and plant festoons, although it has a small felure, is framed by a fine leaf motif. The mask above the dial is an Empire-style decorative element that enriches the clock’s design.
This finely chiseled gilt bronze library clock is ideal for a desk but also for a shelf, thanks to its very small size. It comes from France, dates from the early 19th century and is in working order, with beautiful original mercury gilding. It strikes the hour and half-hour. Pendulum supported by silk thread and key.
