Wood frame and gilded stucco. 45 x 58 cm André Bauchant (1873-1958) French painter. Self-taught, described as a modern primitive, he revealed himself after the First World War. Nine canvases were exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1921, naive and poetic, his painting was noticed by Amédée Ozenfant and Le Corbusier who became his first buyers. He was exhibited by the Jeanne Bucher gallery in 1927 with more than 70 works. Serge de Diaghilev, director of the Ballets Russes, commissioned sets from him. He participated in the exhibition on self-taught painters created by the Museum of Grenoble in 1937, which was also presented in Zurich, London and New York, helping to build Bauchant's worldwide reputation. The highly regarded Galerie Charpentier Paris organized a retrospective exhibition with 215 works in 1949. He was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1950. Works by Bauchant are present in the collections of many museums, including the Petit Palais Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in Strasbourg and Lille, the Museum of Grenoble and Nantes, the Museum of Naive Art in Laval, the Dina Verny Foundation, the Maillol Museum, and the Zander Collection in Cologne.
