"Gold Embroidered Ceremonial Sleeve From The Greek National Costume Known As La Fustanelle - Greece 19th Century"
Second half of the 19th century Greece Interesting document of an embroidered ceremonial sleeve of the Greek national costume known as fustanella, dating from the period of the constitution of the Greek state in the 19th century. The fustanella costume with its pleated white skirt, included several vests, the last of which had richly embroidered removable sleeves. Here, the crimson velvet background is entirely covered with appliqué embroidery based on twisted and braided gold thread cords. On the reverse, a cardboard lining ensures the sleeve stays in place, but above all allows one to appreciate the great dexterity of the Greek embroiderers! Piece with natural patina and slight tarnishing of the gold threads. Good structural condition. Uncommon piece. Dimensions: flat 58 cm x 34 cm Similar reference at the Benaki Museum in Athens.
