"Carved Lace Folder - La Pieuse Dentelle - Folk Art - Haute-loire"
Dated 1897 France – Auvergne – Haute-Loire A rare and moving object, this carved wooden lace folder, in rectangular format, is a beautiful testimony to the know-how and artistic sensitivity of the rural world of Auvergne at the end of the 19th century. Patinated by time, this folder features a deeply engraved hollow sculpture, at once simple, elegant and full of symbols. On one side, two solar rosettes with spiral motifs frame a formed central motif, evoking union, fidelity and the cycles of nature. In the center, the numbers “1897” discreetly date the object, reminding us that it was probably a personal gift or an object made for a special occasion, perhaps a wedding or a pious wish. The other side is decorated with a large geometric rosette with stylized plant decoration, below a Christian cross, itself framed by the initials “RV”, probably those of the lacemaker or the person for whom the object was intended. Perhaps a pious woman, or a man who made this object as an offering, these initials testify to an intimate and spiritual bond. The whole is bordered by a serrated frieze of wolf teeth running around the edges, framing the composition with care and solemnity. A precious and personal tool, this folder was used to flatten and smooth the delicate threads of bobbin lace, but it is much more than a simple work instrument: a true object of popular art, carrying an emotional and spiritual message, halfway between an everyday tool and an intimate talisman. Condition: Very beautiful old patina, wear from use, small handling marks, but very good overall condition (see photos). Dimensions: Height: 14.5 cm Width: 7 cm
