"Carved Lace Folder - The Dance Of The Rosettes - Folk Art - Haute-loire"
Late 19th century France – Auvergne – Haute-Loire An object of rare quality of execution, this carved wooden lace folder is a remarkable example of the rural folk art of the Massif Central, as it was expressed in the intimate world of lacemakers. Both sides are richly decorated with complex geometric patterns engraved in depth. On one side, a large solar rosette with spiral motifs radiates from the center, framed by wolf tooth friezes and stylized almond-shaped plant motifs, evoking seeds, germination, and fertility. This decoration, both radiant and protective, symbolizes the cycles of nature, rebirth, and vital energy. The other side presents an even more meticulous decoration: a tight composition of rosettes in the flower of life, a powerful motif, symbolizing cosmic harmony and the hidden order of the world, often linked to the ideas of protection and fertility. The serrated frieze running all around the folder frames these decorations with a graphic rigor that gives the whole an austere and solemn beauty. Beyond its practical function for flattening the delicate threads of bobbin lace, this object reads like a true talisman, mixing symbols of protection, love and work well done, intended to accompany the lacemaker in her patient hours of creation.
