Biography:
VITO VACCARO 1887/1960
Vito Vaccaro was a painter and sculptor born in Palermo.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo and was a pupil of Marco Rutelli.
His first works appeared in 1913 at the Exhibition of the Artistic Circle of his city.
In 1914, he received a silver medal at the "Exposition of Fine Arts - Didactic Exhibition" at the Teatro Massimo, and a review was given at the Giornale di Sicilia. Later, he gained recognition and prizes at regional exhibitions in Sicily.
A period of silence was triggered by his participation in the 1915-18 war.
He then moved to Milan, where he fully demonstrated his skills and joined the circle of Milanese artists.
He participated in the National Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Brera (1923 - Milan), the Second Roman Biennale (1924), the First Marinara Exhibition (1925 - Rome), the XV International Exhibition in Venice (1926), the Second Exhibition of the Lombard Fascist Syndicate (1929 - Milan), and the II Roman Biennale (1928).
He held numerous solo exhibitions in Milan: Galleria Vinciana, Galleria Geri, Galleria Bolzani, and various galleries in the Lombard provinces. His works were cited by Italian newspapers such as Il Messaggero, L'Ora, Corriere della Sera, and in Paris, "La Revue Moderne," which reinforced the power of attraction and the search for human content in simple and humble beings.
His pictorial themes were numerous: still lifes, landscapes, and compositions with figures.
They ranged from oil paintings to watercolors and pastels.
Each work highlights the precision of the drawing and the strength of the color, which evoke the gentleness of a child, while maintaining the intensity of an old man, and the light and shadow of a still life.
Sculptures include: Maternity, Laughing Child, The Grape Bearer, and Montanaro.
Various tombstones honoring the dead (Cesare Correnti School - Via Solferino School, Milan).
There are numerous monuments created at the Monumental Cemetery of Milan, among which a magnificent Pietà stands out.
Among the posthumous exhibitions in Bergamo, the "First Exhibition of Deceased Artists" (1963) and the "Salone della Consulta" (1974) in Milan, at the Palazzo del Turismo, were notable.
Nearly fifty years after his death, part of the collection was presented at the Humanist Library of the Incoronata, coinciding with the publication of the first monograph by the Mazzotta publishing house. The volume contains 25 sculptures, 80 paintings, and 60 color and black-and-white drawings.
Vito Vaccaro has been included among the most distinguished artists of the city of Milan.
