"French School, Faustulus Brings Romulus And Remus To Acca Larentia, Oil On Canvas, 1908"
We are offering for sale this interesting canvas, dated very precisely on the back of the frame March 26, 1908, signed lower left without us being able to decipher. In any case, a rather rare subject (especially at the beginning of the 20th century) and no less founding since it is, in the great tradition of history painting, the representation of the shepherd Faustulus bringing to Acca Larentia the twins Romulus and Remus, until then raised in the lap of the legendary she-wolf. A very beautiful touch and vibrant colors for this canvas stylistically straddling post-impressionism and symbolism. The artist must have had a certain intellectual sensitivity with the narrative proposed here, not only for having chosen this singular subject of History, but also by representing a geography that evokes the Alban Mountains in the background. Good general condition of conservation. The canvas could be re-stretched. Modern frame, American box. Height 325 mmLength 405 mm
