"Statuette - Fragment - Virgin And Child - Marble Sculpture - Late Period"
Late 16th century France – Massif Central This small marble sculpture, representing a Virgin and Child, is a moving testimony to popular devotion at the end of the 16th century. Sculpted with simplicity and sincerity, it reveals a sensitivity specific to the popular representations of this period. The Virgin, dressed in a loose cloak with schematic folds, tenderly carries the Child Jesus on her right arm. The face, soberly sketched, expresses a naive and touching serenity characteristic of the productions of the Haute Époque. The refined treatment of the features as well as the deliberate stylization testify to work carried out in a provincial workshop, probably intended for private devotional use. The marble has a beautiful patina, slightly polished by time, giving the whole a soft ivory color. A touching and authentic object, intended for lovers of ancient statuary and religious folk art.
