Of Russian origin, Séraphin Soudbinine, initially a theater enthusiast, from which he kept his stage name, moved to Paris in 1904 and met Rodin. He collaborated with Rodin on a number of projects, including the marble for “La Main de Dieu”. A ceramics enthusiast, he set up his own kiln in his studio to produce his numerous stoneware and terracotta subjects.
The subject we present is typical of the sculptor's work; the mischievous expression of the faun and the careful treatment of the back muscles illustrate the artist's genius and spirit.
