"The Recital"
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left and located "Firenze",
Countersigned in a difficult manner on the back of the canvas by the artist,
A beautiful work by the Italian painter Sinibaldo Tordi depicting a recital in the opulent interior of an Italian palace. The artist creates precise settings: the crystal chandelier, the paintings, the piano, ... but also the figures with finely detailed faces.
His talent is masterful, the precise details and his play of light are remarkably executed.
A student in Rome of the Spanish painter Salvador Sánchez Barbudo, he belonged to the school of Mariano Fortuny, from whom he learned the technique of 18th-century reconstruction. Tordi demonstrated a particular aptitude for portrait and sacred painting, creating a painting of the Maria Addolorata for the church of San Felice a Ema, near Florence.
During the 20th century, Tordi paid greater attention to detail in depicting interiors, objects, and costumes, giving his work an even more decorative orientation.
He continued to devote himself to genre painting for many years, exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1913, as well as in Italy, notably in Florence and Milan.
Dimensions: 72 x 53 cm unframed and 90 x 73 cm with its original Louis XV-style giltwood frame.
