This beautiful, bright and high-contrast work by Marseille-born Raymond Allègre depicts a lively view of the canal in Venice. It could be the Ponte Storto in San Marsala, with Marco Polo's house in the background.
Raymond Allègre began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, where he became friends with the painter Jean-Baptiste Olive. A student of Vollon, Bonnat, and Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris, he painted landscapes of the Paris region and Normandy from 1875. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1881 to 1932. His work was critically acclaimed and rewarded with various medals during his participation in Salons throughout France.
A painter known for his landscapes, and more specifically for his views of Provence, depicting Martigues, Monaco, Menton, Marseille, and the surrounding area.
He also discovered Venice during a trip in 1900.
Note: A small restoration is visible on the back of the canvas.
