Oil painting on cardboard signed lower left L. Lapeyre.
Measuring 40cm x 35cm without frame, 53cm x 48cm overall.
Title on the back: "Requiem Mass and Te Deum for the Officers and Soldiers of the 3rd Division who died for France during the War, in Speyer Cathedral. December 15, 1918."
Depicting the Ceremonial Catafalque in the Heart of Speyer Cathedral in Germany, a city occupied by the French from 1918 to 1930, painted in 1919.

Lucien Lapeyre, 1882-1967, French painter and illustrator of historical and military scenes, genre scenes, and Orientalist works.Academic style.He was a student of Paul-Émile Boutigny and Albert Larteau at the Academy of Paris, his hometown.He specialized very early on in representations of the Napoleonic Epic.In 1908, he exhibited his painting Retreat of the Army of Sambre-et-Meuse at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1909, presenting his Spanish Campaign there that year.In 1910, he exhibited the painting entitled Un Renseignement and in 1911, General Dorsenne at Essling.In 1912, the painting Captain Hugo at Eylau was presented to the public.He traveled to Egypt and Turkey, from where he brought back numerous Orientalist works.Like other military painters such as Édouard Detaille, who was his contemporary, Lucien Lapeyre also embarked on a work of uniformological illustrations with the theme of the French armies.During the Great War, he produced numerous works depicting French soldiers in the trenches.His military work was popularized in the form of postcards, some of which are preserved at the Defense Historical Service.The artist is listed in Bénézit, Coté Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc.
