Lucien LAURENT-GSELLParis, 1860 – Paris, 1944View of the Bay of MentonOil on canvas81 x 100 cmSigned lower right “Laurent Gsell”Lucien Laurent-Gsell is the son and student of Caspar Gsell. He also studied in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts before exhibiting in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1882 and 1908. Painter and illustrator (of children's books) Lucien Laurent-Gsell is best known for his landscapes, often linked to the sea. He was appointed Official Painter of the Navy in 1911. Laurent-Gsell painted different French regions but especially the region of Dieppe and the Pays de Caux, and Provence and the Côte d'Azur, notably Menton which is the subject of our painting. Painted with an impressionist style with beautiful bright colors, our painting is a very beautiful and large view of the bay of Menton with many details and a very beautiful light. A traveling painter, Laurent-Gsell also painted North Africa, Mali, and Argentina. Two of his paintings are in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay (A Reclining Nude Woman and Different Figures in a Laboratory with Pasteur - he was the nephew of Louis Pasteur).
