Jacques-Martin Capponi (1865-1936) is a Corsican painter whose work is part of a style marked by a sensitive approach to light and human figures. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris, he entered the Grand Prix de Rome competition several times, thus affirming his artistic ambition. Back in Corsica, he became a central figure on the island's artistic scene, notably as director of the municipal drawing course in Ajaccio (1900-1907). His works, exhibited from 1898, demonstrate a great mastery of portraiture and the rendering of Mediterranean atmospheres. Among his most emblematic creations, Anankè (1901), Idylle and Portrait of François Corbellini are kept at the Palais Fesch – Museum of Fine Arts in Ajaccio, attesting to his lasting influence on Corsican art.
