Object description :

"Jacques Martin Capponi (1865-1936), The Old Woman And The Child"
Oil on canvas from the late 19th century, depicting an old lady and a young girl in the streets of a village, probably in Corsica. An image of the passing of time, this canvas is treated with quality. Signed "J.Capponi" and illegible date. Jacques-Martin Capponi (1865-1936) is a Corsican painter whose work is part of a style marked by a sensitive approach to light and human figures. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris, he entered the Grand Prix de Rome competition several times, thus affirming his artistic ambition. Back in Corsica, he became a central figure on the island's artistic scene, notably as director of the municipal drawing course in Ajaccio (1900-1907). His works, exhibited from 1898, demonstrate a great mastery of portraiture and the rendering of Mediterranean atmospheres. Among his most emblematic creations, Anankè (1901), Idylle and Portrait of François Corbellini are kept at the Palais Fesch – Museum of Fine Arts in Ajaccio, attesting to his lasting influence on Corsican art. Good general condition, some light wear. Very beautiful frame circa 1900. Dimensions without frame: 105 / 72 cm
