"17th Century - Poplar Wood Cassina From A Monastery "
Splendid poplar floor chest with fir lid, Tuscan work from the first half of the 17th century (the lid is later, probably from the 18th century).
Coming from a monastery where it was used as a container and stool, the lower part is very worm-eaten although it is very solid (and consolidated).
It still has the label that indicated the contents, fixed in the last restoration with animal glue to prevent it from getting damaged over time.
The bells are the original ones, reinserted in the lid during an 18th-century restoration which also includes the plastering given in the woodworm galleries, as well as the polychromy.
The object has a great taste, you can see the signs of the workmanship and the nails, enormous, are the original ones.
You can clearly see the guide incisions for shaping the wood.
