"Silver And Silver-gilt Ophthalmology, 18th Century"
Small set of two ophthalmology instruments of rare quality and luxurious design. These two instruments were used together and have the same provenance. They are both French, datable around 1760-1770:- A spring-loaded cystotome by La Faye, used for cataract surgery. It was invented by La Faye in 1752 (see one of the last photos showing the original publication in the Mémoires de l'Académie Royale de Chirurgie published in 1753). The instrument is made of solid silver and is in perfect condition of preservation and functioning. It is an important instrument in the history of ophthalmology and eye surgery. Closed length: 10 cm.- A caustic holder, or "porte pierre infernale" in vermeil, that is to say gilded silver, which was used in ophthalmology. Excellent condition. Length: 10 cm.
