This ivory rattle represents a Yaksha, a benevolent deity associated with fertility and prosperity in Indian religious tradition. Yakshas were nature spirits venerated in Jainism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Depictions of Yakshas and their female counterparts, Yakshis, were common on votive steles and architectural reliefs, emphasizing their protective and beneficent roles.
