He was the pupil of the landscape and animal painter Johann Jakob Biedermann in Constance, and settled in 1830 in Munich. He is known for his realistically executed naturalistic works, scenes of the rural countryside and mountain pastures incorporating animals, notably cattle and sheep. He collaborated with the Zuber wallpaper manufacturer on the creation of panoramics.
