Pewter Cup - Montargis, End Of XVIII Th C.

Pewter cup of flared shape with gadrooned pedestal engraved in full "au tremblé" with friezes of geometric motifs.
Control mark: FF crowned / MON(TAR)GIS / 1694.
Mark of Louis Gabriel SAMAIN received master in Paris in 1766 : flower maintained / G.L.S / P. (He settled in Montargis from 1769).
Height: 11.3 cm.
MONTARGIS, Last third of the 18th century

Of fine quality in very good condition and of rare provenance (a small repair at the foot is however indicated by an arrow on one of the photos).
To my knowledge, the only example listed to date for this city.
Like many production centers, the royal edict of 1691 establishing the obligation of control was not respected. This 1694 vintage has probably never been updated; It was used throughout the 18th century and therefore does not allow, on its own, in the absence of a master's mark, to date the objects bearing it. This explains the chronological contradiction between the vintage of the control and that of the period of activity of the master.
