Signed “Ben Abdallah” in the lower left corner, in Latin letters and Arabic calligraphy.
Jellal Ben Abdallah (1921-2017) is a Tunisian artist from Sidi Bou Saïd, a city that inspired him throughout his career. A painter, but also a ceramist, mosaicist, and sculptor, he exhibited from 1939 and participated in the Tunisian Salon in 1942 and 1945. In 1952, he opened a studio in Paris in the Montparnasse district. The Atrium Gallery in Tunis dedicated a solo exhibition to him entitled “Femmes je vous aime!” in 2010. Inspired by miniatures, his style is characterized by fine-line drawing and ethereal atmospheres with delicate colors. Views of his hometown, women in elegant poses dressed in traditional Tunisian costumes and everyday objects are his favorite subjects.
