18th-century French school
Pen and brown ink on paper, antique gilt frame
Paper: 16 cm x 19 cm
With frame: 29 cm x 34 cm
This pen and brown ink drawing, from the 18th-century French school, illustrates a tribute scene in a neoclassical style influenced by Antiquity. Beneath a half-moon composition, it depicts two groups confronting each other in a solemn exchange: on the left, bearded figures draped in antique style, including a crowned figure, bow and extend offerings to a group of warriors on the right, armed with spears and wearing Greek helmets. The fruit baskets and amphorae, in the center of the scene, materialize the act of tribute, the central element of the composition. The artist skillfully plays on the balance of masses and the animation of gestures, highlighting the opposition between the hieratic figures on the left and the tension of the warriors on the right.
The state of conservation shows a patina of time which gives the drawing a certain charm, reinforced by an old gilded frame which highlights this narrative scene of classical inspiration.
