Jacques Chapiro, born June 19, 1897 in Dunebourg (Dvinsk) in Russia (now Daugavpils in Latvia) and died in Paris 13 on December 11, 1972, is a French painter of Russian origin, from the School of Paris. Jacques Chapiro, son of a wood sculptor, began his artistic education in 1897. He entered the Kharkov School of Fine Arts in 1915 then that of kyiv in 1918. In 1921, he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Petrograd. He was employed as an assistant set designer by Meyerhold, a director of constructivist theater. He then worked in the theater world for Stanislavsky and Vakhtangov. In 1925, Chapiro left Russia for Paris and settled in the Cité de la Ruche for the next five years, where he rubbed shoulders with Chaïm Soutine. In the 1930s, he painted several portraits, which, in their expressiveness and iconography (chair, twisted face, use of very bright colors), anticipate the paintings of Francis Bacon. Some art historians have also repeatedly emphasized the close connection between the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, Soutine, and Chapiro. In 1939, Jacques Chapiro took refuge in Carpentras, then in Serres in the Hautes-Alpes. After the war, he visited Italy before returning permanently to Paris, where he began writing his anecdotal account of the daily lives of the artists of La Ruche. Opposed to the planned demolition of La Ruche in 1967, he founded a preservation committee alongside Marc Chagall and obtained the preservation of this Parisian landmark.
