____Charles Borromeo 1538-84 Milan - Nephew of Pope Pius IV. At the age of 12, he received the title of "commendatory", the tonsure and the benefice of the Benedictine abbey of Arona, left vacant by his uncle. He decided to devote his fortune to the poor. Promoted to cardinal with the support of Pius V, he actively participated in the Council of Trent, striving to reform the abuses that had entered the Church, and had the catechism of the Council of Trent written (1566). In 1565, at the age of 27, he was archbishop of Milan. He also contributed to the arrival of the Holy Shroud in Turin. During the plagues of 1576 and 77 he helped the sick by spending all his possessions, ignoring the dangers of contagion. He died in 1584, at the age of 46, exhausted by fatigue and deprivation.
