Among the Shira-Punu group, the Massango, Mashango, Sango, and Sangu settled in the Chaillu massif in Gabon, as well as in the Ngounié province. The use of baskets and reliquary bundles containing the bones of the deceased, on which sculptures of this type rested, was widespread throughout Gabon, particularly among the Fang, the Kota, as well as the Mitsogho and the Massango. Among the latter, this cult is known as Bumba or Mbumba. These sculptures, acting as "mediators" between the living and the dead who watched over their descendants, were associated with the bwete rites among the Kota, similar to those of the Fang. In the exclusive presence of initiates, the clan's major decisions were made during ceremonies where the reliquaries were taken out and used.
