Object description :

"Georges Chauvel (1886-1962) Pair Of Large Art Deco Gilt Bronze Statues"
Rare pair of large gilt bronze sculptures from the Art Deco period around 1925 signed G. CHAUVEL (Georges Chauvel 1886-1962) foundry stamp -Henri Rouard in Paris- and titled "Bain de Champagne Caron" Model for the famous Parisian perfumer. Composition in the pure Art Deco style depicting slightly naked bathers dressed in drapery, elegant postures in the archetype of Venus preparing to put a foot in the water, the smiling face and almond-shaped eyes evoking serenity, the curly hair delicately held back by a headband. Good condition, they measure respectively 52 cm high X 26 cm long X 14 cm wide. This "Bain de champagne" responds to a commission from the Maison Caron who were looking for an advertisement for their products. Legend has it that a Californian billionaire, accustomed to taking Champagne baths, asked the French perfumer Ernest Caron to create a perfume that could replace the exquisite sparkling wine. This is how the "Bain de Champagne" was created, which would make the success of the Maison Caron. Chauvel's art is part of a period of artistic wonder where the desire to achieve old canons and the study of new forms were combined.

Georges Chauvel (1886-1962) studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen with Alphonse Guilloux. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1919. The creator of imposing monuments, he is particularly known for the one created in 1920 representing a woman crowned with laurels with a dying soldier at her feet, exhibited in the Somme. His Female Nude Walking, exhibited in the Reuilly garden in Paris, also contributed to his notoriety. Chauvel's art is part of a period of artistic wonder, combining a desire to perfect old canons with the study of new forms. Chauvel carefully and realistically studies the female body, playing on curves and sensual shapes.
